ADDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT RESOURCES
Supportive resources and legal protections are available to career seekers and employees.
- The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), protects job seeker and employee rights and prevents eligible employers from discriminating against qualified job applicants and employees with a disability or disabilities. ADA only applies to state and local government employers and private employers with 15 or more employees.
- Applicants and employees have the right to choose whether or not to disclose a disability.
- To be protected under the ADA during the hiring process, applicants must meet the job requirements and be able to complete essential job functions with or without a reasonable accommodation.
- Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) provides support to develop customized workforce solutions for businesses and individuals with disabilities to develop a diverse and inclusive workforce that unites businesses and individuals with disabilities toward a common good.
- Individuals with current or previous justice system involvement are eligible to compete for most jobs. The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission provides guidelines for employers to ensure employment decisions protect the civil rights of individuals.
- Employers may request to review candidate’s criminal or public records. Michigan’s Clean Slate Act supports expungement of certain types of misdemeanors or felony records.
- Veteran Employment Services provides career services to eligible veterans to reduce or eliminate barriers into the workforce.
- The VA Transition Assistance Program (TAP) provides support to Service members to transition to civilian life including employment resources.
