How the H-1B One Workforce Grant is Advancing Michigan’s Talent Ecosystem
As a key partner in the Workforce Intelligence Network Industry Infinity initiative, Henry Ford College (HFC) is leading the way in preparing students for in-demand careers through innovative, short-term training programs. Leveraging funds from the U.S. Department of Labor’s H-1B One Workforce grant, HFC has expanded its capacity to deliver high-quality, industry-responsive education in both cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing.
Building Talent Pipelines for In-Demand Careers
Through this initiative, HFC has enhanced and launched several programs that align with Southeast Michigan’s most critical workforce needs:
- Cybersecurity & IT Support: HFC’s Information Technology Help Desk Support certificate prepares learners for entry-level roles in IT and provides a gateway into cybersecurity careers. The College has also launched an Automotive Cybersecurity program, addressing the emerging need for digital safety in connected vehicles. In 2024, the WIN Region employed 14,567 Computer User Support Specialists. The median wage for this role stands at $27.29 per hour, which is notably higher than the state’s overall median wage. With the typical entry-level education requirement being some college, no degree, HFC’s certificate program offers an accessible pathway into this in-demand and well-paying career.

- Advanced Manufacturing & Mechatronics: HFC is strengthening Michigan’s manufacturing workforce through programs like Mechatronics Technology, Battery Technology, and a redesigned Design and Manufacturing AAS degree. These programs blend hands-on training with automation, robotics, and electrical systems, preparing students for the evolving industrial landscape. The demand for Electro-Mechanical and Mechatronics Technologists and Technicians is on the rise in the WIN Region, with employment reaching 433 in 2024, a 19% increase in just one year. These professionals earn a median wage of $29.79 per hour, significantly outpacing the state average. Since most positions require an Associate’s degree, Henry Ford College’s program provides students with a direct pathway into a rewarding and fast-growing technical career.
